Pandering to His Base — Will Intelligent Voters See Through?
May 26th, 2010
If you’re curious about the direction of the current administration, here are some thoughts. These points are taken from current events unfolding as we speak and point to the fears of the weakening Democratic Party. The Democrats are losing ground, that’s obvious; one view of any major or minor poll will solidify that statement. Now, key, strategic measures are in play by Obama and his administration that they pray will simply hold their base in place for the bloodshed to come.
It was once said that for a president to win an election they had to visit the foreign lands of Ireland, Italy and Israel – I have Charles Krauthammer to thank for that sentiment. Drawing a parallel, today’s most important base for the Democratic Party includes the three constituencies of The Hispanics, The Jews and The Gays. Obama campaigned with promises to these groups and yet has spent the past 18 months eroding that base through one flip-flop after another.
Now, as Obama watches his ship sinking, he begins a frantic set of maneuvers to right the course. No amount of efforts will work, however, as Americans, in numbers as great as upwards of reportedly 70% have removed their rose-tinted glasses. Here, then are some of the embarrassing measures Obama is trying in his attempts to see just how blind the remaining 30% of you are:
First, we have the gratuitous 1,200 National Guards being deployed to the border (rumored by some in the media to primarily fill desk jobs). This comes as Obama continues to threaten a suit against Arizona over a law (Az1070) that Obama, Holder and many others in the administration have admittedly still not even read. The threat of suit has angered many Americans and is a feeble attempt to garner the Hispanic vote. Further attempting to sway Hispanics to vote for the Democrats in the mid November elections, Obama invites Calderon to speak on the floor of Congress. Now perhaps that in and of itself is not so unique. But to have a unanimous standing ovation by the Democrats when Calderon speaks is a blatant ploy aimed solely at mid-term ballot boosting.
Lest we forget how the administration insulted what is, most likely, its most important constituency, the Jewish Democrats, we have one of the most surprising developments of the past year. Next week, on the heels of the Calderon debacle comes a visit to the White House by Netanyahu. The previous visit to our country by the Prime Minister was the first of its kind in history! So insulted was Netanyahu by his treatment that it led to accusations of “hazing”, with Netanyahu’s newspapers stating it was “treatment reserved for the President of Equatorial Guinea”. Without question, this hastily scheduled meeting is a measured attempt to mend some very deep wounds. I, for one, trust the intelligence of the voters to see through the pandering.
Finally, we have the moves by Obama to satisfy the Gay voters. This issue is red hot and no one plays these cards better than Obama as evidenced by his campaign. Two moves by Obama are aimed directly at appeasing this constituency, with the DADT vote the most egregious. This administration has moved to rush a vote on the DADT law to as early as next week. Why? They know that to wait until after the November elections will surely result in a losing battle for this issue. Obama is in favor of the hastening of this vote, naturally, as he is in favor of the repeal of the law. The votes from this constituency, should he win only the mere expediting of the vote in Congress, are all but sewn up.
Finally, his latest move to nominate Kagan was also in keeping with the Obama method. This nominee was immediately aligned with Gay America. Is she, isn’t she? And what if she is? That was not the real issue. “She fought for us against the military on her own school grounds and she believes in the rights of the oppressed!” Even if she cannot be “outed” she will always feel “our” pain. Obama will most certainly hold these ballots. Even if no one sees through the charade.
And that’s precisely what the past 18 months have been America – a charade!
